Sedation Dentistry

A More Comfortable Dental Experience

Feeling nervous about visiting the dentist is more common than you might think. At Cornell Dental Centre, we want every patient to feel comfortable, informed and supported throughout their care. For eligible patients, nitrous oxide sedation can be an option to help make dental treatment a more relaxed experience.

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation that is used for both children and adults. It is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over the nose. As you breathe normally, the nitrous oxide can help ease feelings of nervousness and promote a calm, relaxed state.

What Can You Expect?

Nitrous oxide sedation is designed to help you relax while remaining awake and responsive throughout your appointment. You can continue to communicate with our dental team, and the effects typically wear off quickly once the nitrous oxide is stopped.

Your comfort and safety are always our priorities. Dr. Weerasinghe will determine whether nitrous oxide sedation is an appropriate option based on your individual needs and the treatment being provided.

Who May Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Nitrous oxide may be considered for patients who experience:

  • Dental anxiety or nervousness
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Sensitivity or discomfort during dental treatment
  • Difficulty relaxing during appointments
  • Previous negative or traumatic dental experiences
  • Anxiety around needles or certain dental procedures
  • A need for more complex or extended dental treatment
