Tooth Extractions

Gentle, Thoughtful Care When a Tooth Needs to Be Removed

Whenever possible, our goal is to preserve your natural teeth. However, there are situations where a tooth may be too damaged, infected or compromised to restore safely. In these cases, tooth extraction may be the best option for protecting your overall oral health.

At Cornell Dental Centre, we understand that the thought of having a tooth removed can feel overwhelming. Our team takes the time to explain your options, answer your questions and ensure you understand what to expect before, during and after your procedure.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?

A tooth extraction may be considered when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or is affecting the health of surrounding teeth and tissues. Common reasons include:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • A fractured or extensively damaged tooth
  • Advanced gum disease affecting the supporting bone and tissues
  • Crowded teeth or insufficient space
  • Extra teeth interfering with normal tooth development
  • Teeth that need to be removed as part of certain orthodontic treatments
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

Before recommending an extraction, we’ll carefully assess your tooth and discuss whether other treatments, such as a filling, crown or root canal treatment, may be appropriate.

Wisdom Teeth & Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final teeth to develop and are commonly affected by limited space in the mouth. When a wisdom tooth cannot fully emerge, it is considered impacted.

Impacted wisdom teeth can sometimes contribute to discomfort, infection, gum problems, decay or damage to neighbouring teeth. Depending on your individual situation, removal may be recommended to help protect your oral health.

Dr. Weerasinghe provides tooth extraction and wisdom tooth removal as part of Cornell Dental Centre’s comprehensive dental services in Markham. Our focus is on providing careful, comfortable care and helping you understand your options every step of the way.
